FAQ
Find answers to common questions about your care.
How are cataracts treated?
Cataracts are treated with surgery, during which the cloudy natural lens is replaced with a clear artificial lens. For adults, a range of lens options is available, including monofocal lenses for clear vision at one distance, multifocal lenses to reduce the need for glasses at more than one distance, toric lenses to correct astigmatism, and extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses for a continuous range of vision. For children, lens choice is different and is decided by the surgeon based on the child’s age and eye development. Your specialist will explain when surgery is appropriate, which lens option is most suitable for you and what to expect at each stage of treatment.
How are cataracts diagnosed?
Cataracts are diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination with a cataract specialist, usually including a slit-lamp assessment and, where required, dilating eye drops to examine the lens and retina in greater detail. Further tests may include corneal imaging, biometry to calculate the strength of the replacement lens, and optical coherence tomography to assess the retina and identify any underlying conditions.
