11 November 2015 (Dubai, United Arab Emirates): Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai (MEHD) has appointed Professor Robert Scott as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Medical Director. Professor Scott is a specialist in Vitreoretinal Surgery and a highly experienced ophthalmic surgeon, clinical researcher, and medical leader, with almost 30 years’ experience in the medical profession. His surgical special interest is in vitreoretinal surgery, and complex retinal and ocular trauma cases. He has additional subspecialty experience in refractive surgery and microincision cataract surgery.
Professor Robert Scott trained in the UK and has held a series of senior appointments including Consultant Ophthalmologist at Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh; and Vitreoretinal Fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He was previously the Royal Air Force and UK Defence Medical Services Consultant Adviser in Ophthalmology and Training Program Director for military ophthalmologists. Most recently, Professor Scott was a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, and Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre. He was appointed as the Defence Medical Services and Royal College of Ophthalmologists Professor of Ophthalmology in 2011 and in 2014 an honorary Professor by the University of Birmingham, all in recognition of his research into eye trauma.
In addition to his clinical practice, he was the ophthalmology research network lead for the National Institute of Health Research. He has won over £6,000,000 in grants to research anti-scarring treatments for injured eyes and also set up the first UK artificial vision service, using the BrainPort sensory substitution device to help blind patients.
Professor Scott has a substantial body of published research and academic projects to his name and was recognised for this by the recent award of the Lady Cade Medal for Research by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. “It is a great opportunity to take a leadership role in the expansion of this internationally renowned organisation and work with some of the most skilled doctors in the field of ophthalmology,” commented Professor Robert Scott.
