26 November 2015 (Dubai, United Arab Emirates): Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai has appointed Dr. Muralidharan Ramachandran Upendran, MBBS, MS (Ophth), MRCOphth, FRCOphth Consultant Ophthalmologist, Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon to the hospital’s permanent team of consultants.
Dr. Muralidharan Upendran is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with sub-specialist training in Vitreo-Retinal surgery. He specializes in the surgical management of retinal disorders including retinal detachment, macular disease, diabetic retinopathy and ocular trauma. He also specializes in the medical management of retinal vascular disease and macular disorders. He is an experienced cataract surgeon and can manage complex cataract surgery.
Dr. Upendran obtained his medical degree and an introduction to ophthalmology in India. He then moved to Belfast the UK for his higher specialty training in Ophthalmology, before becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London. He received his vitreoretinal surgical training at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre, UK. He has recently worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in retinal disease at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
Dr. Upendran has an interest in research and teaching, with a portfolio of published research in the peer-reviewed press; he has delivered scientific presentations to his fellow doctors, and has led teaching programs for medical students. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists London and a Life member of the All India Ophthalmological Society.
Commenting on the appointment, Professor Robert Scott, Medical Director of Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, said: “Dr. Upendran brings a broad and valuable set of skills to the hospital on top of his skill at vitreoretinal surgery, his experience in complex cataract surgery will be an important asset. Cataract is the world’s leading cause of blindness – it is also the leading cause of blindness in the UAE – which is curable by a routine, cost effective operation.”
