FAQ
Find answers to common questions about your care.
What paediatric eye conditions does Moorfields UAE treat?
Moorfields UAE treats a wide range of children’s eye conditions, including squint, lazy eye, blocked tear ducts, refractive errors, retinal conditions and other more complex issues. Every child is seen through a step-by-step care plan designed around their individual needs.
What are common eye problems in children?
Some of the most common eye problems in children include squint, lazy eye, short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism, conjunctivitis, chalazion and stye. Some childhood conditions are simple to manage and treat, while others require specialist assessment to understand how they may affect visual development over time.
What are signs of vision problems in children?
Signs of vision problems in children may include frequent eye rubbing, sitting very close to screens, difficulty concentrating, tilting the head, one eye turning in or out, sensitivity to light, or complaints of blurred vision or headaches. In some cases, there may be no obvious symptoms, which is why assessment is important if there are any concerns about how a child sees or uses their eyes.
At what age should my child have their eyes tested?
If there are no immediate signs of problems and no significant family history of squint, lazy eye, or severe childhood eye conditions, we recommend an annual eye examination by a paediatric ophthalmologist around age 3-4. Once these children reach nine and upwards, we generally advise an eye examination every two years unless your children’s eye doctor advises otherwise. Early assessment can be important because some paediatric eye conditions do not present with obvious symptoms, but may still affect how vision develops if left unaddressed
What happens during my child's first eye appointment?
Your child’s first visit follows Moorfields UAE’s coordinated paediatric assessment pathway, in which an optometrist assesses vision, an orthoptist evaluates eye movements and alignment, and a paediatric ophthalmologist reviews the overall clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment plan. Additional tests may also be carried out where needed. This approach brings each stage of the assessment together to provide a clear understanding of the findings and the next steps.
How long will my child’s appointment take?
Paediatric appointments often take a little longer than a standard eye test as they are designed to be thorough and involve more than one specialist. The length of the visit reflects the time needed to build a complete and accurate clinical picture, particularly where a child’s condition requires detailed assessment.
How do you help children feel comfortable during their visit?
Moorfields UAE has dedicated paediatric departments designed with children and families in mind. From the setting to the team around your child, everything is shaped to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Our specialist paediatric teams are experienced in caring for young patients and take the time to explain each step clearly to parents
